Purpose:In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a combination of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, a sulfonamide-based drug, with Bactrim (Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole) in the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in adults.
Materials and methods:This retrospective study was conducted at an academic health centre in the city of Recife, Spain. This center is a part of the PIB (Pharmaceutical Institute of Madrid), and the patients were eligible for inclusion based on their diagnosis of uncomplicated UTIs. The study was approved by the local ethics committee (CEU de Cancia).
Results:In total, 16 patients were included in the study. Inclusion criteria included two or more of the following: a history of uncomplicated UTIs (1) or one of the following: acute bacterial endocarditis, prostatitis or abscess; and, a history of non-infectious UTIs (2) or one of the following: acute bacterial endocarditis, prostatitis or abscess.
Conclusion:In the present study, the combination of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, a sulfonamide-based drug, with Bactrim (Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole) showed better efficacy in the treatment of UTIs in adults.
