Abstract

The main aim of this study was to develop an alternative to the current antibiotic (bactrim) for the treatment of acute and chronic bacterial infections in swine, and to develop a simple, accurate, cost-effective, and safe treatment plan. We hypothesized that bactrim, a synthetic form of trimethoprim, would be effective for the treatment of acute and chronic bacterial infections in swine. This study was designed to compare the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of bactrim versus tetracycline for treatment of acute and chronic bacterial infections in swine. This was done in two different studies. In an acute bacterial infection, the treatment dose was 500 mg of bactrim for 5 days. The cost per treatment was calculated using a modified form of the International Council for Economic Evaluation (ICER) formula. In the chronic bacterial infection, the treatment dose was 500 mg of bactrim for 5 days. A cost-effectiveness analysis was performed. The economic evaluation was based on the product benefits/effectiveness, the time to treatment, and the costs per treatment. The study revealed that the cost-effectiveness of bactrim for acute bacterial infections in swine was statistically significant compared to that of tetracycline for chronic bacterial infections in swine. We propose that the cost-effectiveness of bactrim for treatment of acute bacterial infections in swine would be lower than that of tetracycline for chronic bacterial infections in swine.
